Senior curator Martha Sear will discuss items in the National Historical Collection that once belonged to Sir George Reid, a key figure in Australia's Federation-era political history.

High level nuclear waste disposal: Is safety guaranteed?

Several countries are considering expanding their nuclear power capacity but the current vitrification method for storing radioactive waste is far from satisfactory.

Speaker Nick Ware was involved as a microanalyst in the early development of the Australian synroc method for waste disposal and remembers the antagonism of the lobby opposing uranium mining. This talk coincides with the 30th anniversary of the launching of synroc and will give insights into its genesis and examine the prognosis for nuclear power.

Utopia: The Genius of Emily Kame Kngwarreye

This exhibition tells the story of an extraordinary Australian who is one of the world's major artists of the twentieth century. The exhibition covers her connection to Country through images that are also received in the western art world as works of art rivalling the great European and American masters.

Peter Stanley at Mont St Quentin
Ninety years ago on a French hillside: a story of Mont St Quentin
Sunday 31 August 2008, 2pm to 3.30pm
Museum historian Peter Stanley's forthcoming book explores the shadows the Great War cast across twentieth century Australia.

He tells the story of one 12-man platoon involved in the 1918 battle of Mont St Quentin. Ninety years to the day after the battle, he will discuss why and how he is writing the book, read extracts from the manuscript and seek questions and comments from future readers.
