Using the Chamberlain case to explore evidence in history
Topic: Historical skills, Australian history, media
The National Museum of Australia has a collection of objects associated with Lindy Chamberlain – the mother of 9-week-old Azaria Chamberlain, who disappeared at Uluru in 1980.
Mrs Chamberlain was prosecuted for her daughter's murder. Her prosecution, as well as the appeals and inquiries that eventually exonerated her, made the case a controversial and divisive part of Australia's history.
This unit looks at some of the Museum's objects, together with other primary sources, and challenges students to come to their own conclusions based on a critical analysis of the evidence.
