My interest in politics developed at an early age, when I accompanied mum to vote at various state and federal elections. The questions asked by the 8-year-old me were 'what on earth was my mother doing' and 'why was she doing it?' My present interest is sustained by a desire to be informed about the decisions that shape our nation and a desire to know about the people who make them. I participate in the United Nations Youth Association where possible, but beyond this my only political involvement is animated lunchtime discussions with fellow travellers at school!

Talkback Classroom interested me because it represented an opportunity to meet people who are an important part of Australia's political landscape. After the preparatory workshop, I have now learned to appreciate the chance to interact with other young people who are interested in politics.

I have been interested in history as long as I can remember and have always enjoyed finding out about history and things concerned with it. Recently I was most amazed to discover that many of the things that were interesting in history were happening every day right around me; from this point onwards I took considerably more interest in current events as well as things that occured in the past.

One of the things that fascinates me about powerful individuals and their actions is attempting to place myself in their position and seeing if I would have handled the situation in a different and possibly better manner.

As a result of my interest in the affairs of the world, I have continued to read books, listen to ABC radio, argue with friends and attempt to put my brain through mental gymnastics when it really should be doing other things.

Hi! My name is Eliza Forsyth, I'm 16 and in Year 11 at Launceston Church Grammar School. I love domestic and international politics and current affairs, and feel very privileged to have the opportunity to interview one of Australia's most prominent politicians through the Talkback Classroom program. I became involved in Classroom through my school and through previous student panelists who recommended it as a program not to be missed.

My passion for politics was sparked from participation in debating, public speaking and Tasmanian Youth Parliament, and to augment my experience and knowledge in international politics and affairs.

I'm involved in the United Nations Youth Association. I have the ultimate aim of being a UN diplomat or Federal politician, and as such, Talkback Classroom gives me a fabulous insight into the political process. I believe Talkback Classroom provides a unique opportunity for students to work with other like-minded individuals, and express their views and ideas with accomplished Australians - I can't wait for the forum!
