Tools of the Land

Years 3–4

Exhibition visited: Gallery of First Australians

Duration: 75 minutes

$3 per student

Maximum group size: 30 (larger groups of up to 60 can be accommodated by dividing the group into two)

Aims

The aim of this program is to provide students with the opportunity to:

  • learn about the tools and technologies Indigenous Australians have made and used over thousands of years
  • consider why tools and technologies are important in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander society.

Outline

The program has three main components:

  1. Introduction – through object handling, students investigate the uses and manufacture of Indigenous tools.
  2. Gallery visit – students visit specific areas in the Gallery of First Australians to explore the diversity of Indigenous tools and technologies.
  3. Reflection activity – students select and sketch an Aboriginal artefact from the Open Collections area to take back to school.

As students only visit one exhibition during this program, you may like to allow time to visit other exhibitions and to explore other places in the Museum
