Technologies of the First Australians

Years 5–12*

Exhibition visited: Gallery of First Australians

Duration: 30 minutes facilitated, then allow up to 40 minutes for teacher-guided activity

$2.50 per student

Maximum group size: 30 (larger groups can be accommodated by commencing the program at 30 minute intervals)


Aim

The aim of this program is to provide students with the opportunity to:

  • explore some of the technologies of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through handling tools used both before European settlement and today
  • explore the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through the exhibitions.

Outline

The program has two main components:

  1. Introduction – through object handling, students investigate several aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander technologies and cultures
  2. Gallery visit – under the supervision of their teachers, students explore the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and record aspects of their technologies and experience.

As students only visit one exhibition during this program, you may like to allow time to visit other exhibitions and to explore other places in the Museum.
