Sustaining our Environment

Years 5–12*

Exhibition visited: Old New Land gallery

Duration: 2 hours

$5 per student

Maximum group size: 60 for Years 5–9 and 40 for Years 9–12

Aim

The aim of this program is to provide students with the opportunity to:

  • explore issues relating to our environment by examining the objects on display in the Old New Land gallery
  • consider important issues in sustaining the Australian environment.

Outline

The program has three main components:

  1. Introduction – using object handling, students are introduced to the concepts of sustainability and environmental change throughout Australia's history. Students explore objects that relate to a variety of environmental themes such as water, climate, energy consumption, urban living, natural resources, biodiversity, agriculture and environmental crises and examine how these themes are interrelated.
  2. Gallery visit – working in groups, students explore the Old New Land gallery and photograph objects that relate to an aspect of Australia's environment.
  3. Reflection activity – groups use their images to create a poster reflecting environmental themes and suggesting how Australians can live sustainably.

As students only visit one exhibition during this program, you may like to allow time to visit other exhibitions and to explore other places in the Museum.
