Investigating Sources

Years 7–12+

Exhibitions visited: Permanent galleries

Duration: 45 minutes facilitated, the allow 45 minutes for teacher-guided exploration

$3 per student

Maximum group size: 30 (larger groups can be accommodated by commencing the program at 45 minute intervals)

Aim

The aim of this program is to provide students with the opportunity to develop skills in observation, analysis and critical thinking to enable them to effectively investigate history.

Outline

The program has two main components:

  1. Introduction – through examining a variety of primary sources, students explore how historians investigate the past. They examine the meaning, context and reliability of sources and draw conclusions about their usefulness for historical research.
  2. Gallery visits – under the supervision of their teachers, students identify primary sources in selected exhibitions and explore the limitations of each source and the way it has been used to reveal a particular event or theme.

You may like to allow extra time to visit other exhibitions and to explore other places in the Museum.
