Exploring Australian Identities

Years 5–12*

Exhibitions visited: Permanent galleries

Duration: 2 hours

$5 per student

Maximum group size: 60 for Years 5–9 and 40 for Years 10–12

Aim

The aim of this program is to provide students with the opportunity to:

  • explore their identities as Australians and how they have been shaped by historical events
  • reflect on the diversity of Australian identities and how they have changed over time.

Outline

The program has three main components:

  1. Introduction – through object handling, students investigate events and themes in Australian history and consider how these influence and connect to our identity as Australians.
  2. Gallery visit – working in groups, students explore the Museum's permanent galleries and photograph objects that they feel illustrate the range of identities expressed by Australians throughout our history.
  3. Reflection activity – groups use their images to create a poster reflecting a particular aspect of Australian identity.

You may like to allow extra time to visit other exhibitions and to explore other places in the Museum.
