Exhibitions visited: Museum's permanent exhibition galleries
Duration: 2 hours
$5 per student
Maximum group size: 60 for Years 5–9; 40 for Years 10–12
Aim
The aim of this program is to provide students with the opportunity to:
- explore the concepts behind Museum collections
- develop an understanding of how the collecting of objects and images by the National Museum of Australia helps to tell stories of Australia.
Outline
The program has three main components:
-
Introduction – through object handling, students investigate the links between collection and display and consider why the National Museum might have chosen to collect particular objects.
-
Gallery visits – working in groups, students explore exhibitions and photograph objects they feel are significant in telling the stories of Australia and Australians.
-
Reflection activity – groups use their images to create a poster reflecting on what the objects in the National Museum's collections tell us about Australia.
You may like to allow extra time to visit other exhibitions and to explore other places in the Museum.
