Creating a Nation

Years 5–12*

Exhibition visited: Permanent galleries

Duration: 2 hours

Cost: $5 per student

Maximum group size: 60 for Years 5–9 and 40 for Years 9–12

Aim

The aim of this program is to provide students with the opportunity to:

  • explore events and ideas which have shaped Australia
  • reflect on Australia's development as a nation.

Outline

The program has three main components:

  1. Introduction – using a timeline concept and object handling, students discuss development and change in Australia. Students explore objects that relate to key events and ideas in Australia's history such as exploration, transport, communication, home life, popular culture, agriculture, immigration, sport, politics, defence, industry and urbanisation.
  2. Gallery visit – working in groups, students explore the Museum's permanent exhibitions and photograph objects that illustrate an aspect of Australia's development as a nation.
  3. Reflection activity – groups use their images to create a timeline reflecting those developments they consider most significant in Australia's history.

You may like to allow extra time to visit other exhibitions and to explore other places in the Museum.
