Australia's Migrations Stories

Years 5–12*

Exhibitions visited: Permanent galleries

Duration: 30 minutes facilitated, then allow 40 minutes for teacher-guided activity

$2.50 per student

Maximum group size: 30 (larger groups of up to 60 can be accommodated by commencing the program at 30 minute intervals)

Aim

The aim of this program is to provide students with the opportunity to:

  • explore the personal stories of individuals and groups who have migrated to Australia since 1788
  • reflect on why people have migrated to Australia
  • consider the changing attitudes and government policies towards migrants over time (secondary students).

Outline

The program has three main components:

  1. Introduction – through examining a set of objects representing migrants' luggage, students investigate the experiences of migrants coming to Australia and how Australian Government policy and community attitudes towards migrants have changed over time.
  2. Gallery visits – under the supervision of their teachers, students identify stories in the Museum's exhibition galleries and explore when, why and how various individuals came to Australia.

You may like to allow extra time to visit other exhibitions and to explore other places in the Museum.
