Australian Icons

Years 34

Exhibition visited: Nation gallery

Duration: 75 minutes

$3 per student

Maximum group size: 30 (larger groups of up to 60 can be accommodated by dividing the group into two)

Aim

The aim of this program is to provide students with an understanding of formal and informal symbols in Australian society and culture. Also looks at the way some symbols have become national icons.

Outline

  1. Introduction – working in groups, students investigate a collection of objects that symbolise an aspect of Australian life.
  2. Gallery visit – students explore the Nation gallery, looking for objects which tell them something about our national identity.
  3. Gallery activity – students participate in a treasure hunt for a variety of iconic objects and then draw their favourite object to take back to school.

As students only visit one exhibition during this program, you may like to allow time to visit other exhibitions and to explore other places in the Museum.
