Exhibition visited: Gallery of First Australians
Duration: 75 minutes
$3 per student
Maximum group size: 30 (larger groups of up to 60 can be accommodated by dividing the group into two)
Aim
The aim of this program is to provide students with the opportunity to:
- understand the importance of oral stories in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, particularly to the concept of the Dreaming
- understand the way Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people lived prior to 1788.
Outline
The program has three main components:

Introduction – students are introduced to the concept of the Dreaming through an interactive storytelling session and explore the significance of oral story telling and 'Country' in Aboriginal society.

Object handling – students handle and discuss a range of objects that relate to Indigenous life before 1788.

Gallery visit – students visit specific areas in the exhibition to make further discoveries about the diversity of Indigenous cultures.
As students only visit one exhibition during this program, you may like to allow time to visit other exhibitions and to explore other places in the Museum.
