A Living Culture

Years 5–12*

Exhibition visited: Gallery of First Australians

Duration: 2 hours

$5 per student

Maximum group size: 60 for Years 5–9 and 40 for Years 9–12

Aim

The aim of this program is to provide students with the opportunity to:

  • explore aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures including identity, diversity and spirituality
  • understand how Indigenous peoples lived before European settlement and how they have survived and adapted to the present day.

Outline

The program has three main components:

  1. Introduction – through object handling, students investigate a number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander objects and consider their uses
  2. Gallery visit – working in groups, students explore the Gallery of First Australians and photograph objects which illustrate an aspect of Indigenous Australians' living culture
  3. Reflection activity – groups use their images to create a poster reflecting their understandings of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

As students only visit one exhibition during this program, you may like to allow time to visit other exhibitions and to explore other places in the Museum.
