Preschool–Year 4

1. Then and Now
Students investigate changes in Australian life over the last 100 years. They handle and investigate a variety of historical objects from everyday life and then continue this exploration in the galleries.

2. Transport in Australia
Students handle objects that help them to explore the way different forms of transport, including changes to transport, have affected people's lives in Australia's history. They then visit the PS Enterprise (weather permitting) and Museum galleries to continue their exploration.

3. Australian Icons
Students investigate some iconic objects that symbolise aspects of Australian life. They then explore the galleries to identify a range of Australian icons.

4. Australia's Migration Stories
Students investigate the contents of a mystery migrant's bag and study some migration stories. They reflect on why people have come to Australia and how government policy and community attitudes have changed over time. Students then explore the galleries to learn more about the contribution of migrants to Australian life.

Duration: 30 minutes facilitated, then allow 40 minutes for teacher-guided exploration.

5. Springboard into Australian History

Students participate in a fast paced quiz show that really tests their knowledge of Australian history. Questions are age appropriate. Students then explore the galleries to develop their own quiz.

6. Creating a Nation
Students form small groups to investigate the theme of nationhood by handling and discussing objects. They then explore different galleries using digital cameras to photograph objects related to the Australian nation. The photographs are used to create a timeline which students take back to school for follow-up activities.

7. Exploring Australian Identities

This program examines our identity as Australians and the historical events that have shaped our characteristics. After investigating a variety of objects, students take digital cameras into the galleries to discover and photograph events and issues that may have influenced who we are. Senior students are encouraged to reflect more deeply on the events they have chosen.

Preschool–Year 2

1. Aboriginal Australia
Students are introduced to the concept of the Dreaming through interactive puppet storytelling. They handle and investigate some Aboriginal artefacts before exploring the diversity of Aboriginal people and cultures through activities in the Gallery of First Australians.

2. Tools of the Land
Students handle and investigate a range of Aboriginal tools that have been made and used over thousands of years. They then discuss their uses before exploring a range of Aboriginal technologies in the Gallery of First Australians.

3. Technologies of the First Australians
Students gain a greater understanding of Indigenous technologies by handling and discussing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artefacts prior to exploring the exhibitions in the Gallery of First Australians.

4. A Living Culture

Students explore a range of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artefacts to help them understand how people lived in Australia before European settlement. Then, using digital cameras, they investigate the Gallery of First Australians recording evidence of how these cultures have survived and adapted to the present day.

1. Sustaining our Environment
Through object handling and discussion students explore the relationship between the Australian continent and its people and consider how sustaining the environment continues to influence the Australian experience. Using digital cameras, students then explore the galleries to record the impact humans have had on the Australian environment and how the environment has shaped who we are.

2. EnviroQuiz
Students participate in a lively quiz game focussing on environmental sustainability. They then explore the Old New Land gallery to further explore Australia's socio-environmental history and develop their own quiz.

Understanding the Museum

Years 3–8

1. 21,000 years of History
Students step back in time as they explore the historic sites on Acton Peninsula, surrounding the Museum. Through object handling, stories and imagination, students learn about the history of the area including its Indigenous peoples, the first European pastoral settlers, early Canberra government and today's National Museum.

Please note that this is an outdoor program. Students should wear sturdy shoes and bring hats and raincoats as necessary.

2. Discovering the Museum
Students handle and investigate objects and explore the Museum's collections using digital cameras to record and reflect on how the Museum has chosen to tell Australia's stories.

3. Investigating Sources
Students handle and investigate a variety of source materials from the Museum's collection and are challenged to consider how reliable the sources are in telling Australia's story. They then explore the galleries and analyse the way the Museum uses sources to tell Australia's stories.

4. Interpreting the Museum
Curators and education officers guide students as they explore a range of exhibition methodologies and analyse how evidence is used to interpret and present Australian history.

5. Analysing Museum Exhibits
Students begin by exploring the ways an object can be 'read' and the variety of questions that can be asked in order to understand its meaning in an exhibition. They then analyse exhibits in the Museum's galleries and consider how objects and source material are used to represent Australia and Australians.

Duration: 45 minutes facilitated, then allow 45 minutes for teacher guided exploration

6. Talking Points
A 45-minute guided exploration of the Museum's galleries introduces students to several key objects, stories and themes. Students then further investigate the Museum under the supervision of their teachers.

Maximum group size: 40 divided into groups of 10
Duration: 45 minutes facilitated, then allow another 45–60 minutes for teacher-guided exploration.

7. Museum Highlights

A dynamic audiovisual presentation introduces students to the exciting exhibitions found in the National Museum of Australia. Students are then encouraged to explore the galleries under the supervision of their teachers.

Minimum group size: 60
Duration: 15 minutes facilitated, then allow another 60–90 minutes for teacher guided exploration.
$1 per student

If you are unable to book into one of our exciting Education programs, students are welcome to explore the Museum under the close supervision of their teachers.

Group size: 60–120
Duration: We recommend at least 90 minutes to view the Museum.

Feel free to use these activity sheets on your next visit, however please be aware of the following:

  • these activities are designed to be facilitated by teachers in small groups
  • allow up to 1 hour for students to complete each sheet
  • make sure each group has a museum Map before starting - these can be obtained from the information desk when you first enter the Museum.

Booking information

Bookings are essential for all Education programs both paid and teacher-guided. Detailed program information, availability of programs and booking procedures can be obtained by contacting the Bookings Officer.

After a booking is made, a confirmation letter and supporting materials will be sent to your school, addressed to the booking contact teacher, to help you prepare students. Charges apply for most education programs.

For some programs large groups can be split and two programs run consecutively. For other programs students are divided into groups of 30 and commence the program at 30 minute intervals. Please speak to our bookings officer about these possibilities if your group is larger than the maximum size.

Visiting the nation's capital

The national capital offers a unique opportunity for students to observe firsthand Australia's parliamentary system and to engage with our cultural heritage.

The National Capital Educational Tourism Project is an initiative designed to help schools understand the educational benefit of a visit to the national capital. The project provides details on how to access the Parliamentary and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) travel subsidies, discount accommodation, subsidised entry to attractions and other value-added offers.
