Vaka Moana education resources

Teacher-guided groups

The National Museum of Australia presents two downloadable programs for teacher guided-groups in conjunction with the Voyages of the Pacific Ancestors: Vaka Moana exhibition.

Programs are cross-curricular with links to:

  • SOSE/HSIE
  • Indigenous Studies
  • Design and Technology
  • Astronomy
  • Archaeology
  • Visual Arts

Each program can be adapted for a range of ages and year levels.

Choose Your Own Ocean-going adventure

A double-sided trail which encourages students to choose their own path through the exhibition and learn about the needs and skills of ancient ocean voyagers in the Pacific.

Vaka Moana: Expert Witnesses

This teacher-guided program puts your students in the role of investigator to solve the mysteries of how and why the Pacific Ancestors made their way across the Pacific Ocean. The program divides your class into small groups, according to areas of interest and learning focus. Resources are provided for each group to explore the exhibition using a different focus activity. There are five focus pathways through the exhibition, each of which can be downloaded separately.
