The national capital offers a unique opportunity for students to observe firsthand Australia's parliamentary system and to engage with our cultural heritage. Through our national institutions students experience programs and exhibitions that explore Australia's democracy, values, unity and achievements as a people. Nearly 130,000 students descend upon the national capital each year to take a closer look at what it means to be an Australian.

The National Capital Educational Tourism Project helps schools understand the educational benefit of a visit to the national capital. It also aims to encourage schools to take the opportunity to visit Canberra for the first time. The project provides:

• Parliamentary and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) – subsidies for travel to the national capital. The subsidy varies depending on the distance travelled. (Two National Museum education programs are part of the PACER program: Making a Nation and Meet the People.)
  
• a teachers' pass for teachers travelling to the national capital on weekends and on holidays –  discount accommodation, free entry to attractions and other value-added offers.
