This cabinet was used in experiments at the Australian Institute of Tropical Medicine in Townsville. There was a widely held belief that European settlers could not endure the climate in the tropical north of Australia. This cabinet was used to test the theory by creating a hot micro-environment, wherein the respiration, pulse, temperature and fluid loss of a subject could be measured.
