Hong Hai wheel, 1970s

The boat called the Hong Hai arrived in Australia in 1978 from Vietnam carrying 38 refugees. Between 1975 and 1985, 95,000 Vietnamese refugees were accepted into Australia. The boat is the largest object in the Museum's collection. To restore the vessel, timbers were sourced from contemporary Vietnamese fishing boats.
