The National Historical Collection is the core collection of the National Museum of Australia and includes more than 200,000 objects.

The National Museum's Conservation and Registration teams care for this collection and other archival material.

Registrars and conservators work closely together at Mitchell, on the outskirts of Canberra, where most of the collection is stored.

Engagement with objects often starts long before they are accepted into the National Historical Collection.

Registrars and conservators look at an object's condition, authenticity, research value and potential for display.

Once an object is formally acquired by the Museum, it goes through a more detailed process of registration and conservation, to ensure its care in the long term.
