Windradyne

Description
Windradyne was a Wiradjuri leader in the Bathurst area of New South Wales. A muscular man of 'noble appearance and piercing eye', he was captured in 1822 after clashing with British soldiers. On his release, Windradyne led raids on settlers that escalated in severity and violence. In 1824, Governor Thomas Brisbane declared martial law west of Mount York and additional troops were sent to the area. Later that year, after a series of bloody confrontations that resulted in deaths on both sides, Windradyne accepted a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
