William John Wills

Description
William John Wills (1834-1861) arrived in Victoria in 1853, first working as a shepherd and then assistant to his father, a doctor. He studied surveying and was appointed to a position at the Melbourne Observatory, before being chosen by Robert O'Hara Burke for the Victorian Exploring Expedition attempting to cross the country from south to north in 1860. Wills became second-in-command of the exploration party, and died alongside Burke at Coopers Creek, South Australia, on their return from the Gulf of Carpentaria, in 1861.
