William Charles Wentworth

Description
William Charles Wentworth (1790-1872) was an explorer, lawyer, politician and landowner in colonial New South Wales. Born on Norfolk Island to convict Catherine Crowley and surgeon D'arcy Wentworth, Wentworth identified strongly with the cause of 'emancipists', or ex-convicts, against the 'exclusives', government officials and those of high social status. He also criticised the autocratic powers of the Governor and argued for legal and political reforms. In 1855, Wentworth helped secure a new constitution for self-government in NSW.
