Thomas Livingstone Mitchell

Description
Thomas Livingstone Mitchell (1792-1855) was surveyor general of New South Wales from 1827. He became a renowned explorer, undertaking two expeditions north and west along rivers in New South Wales, before following the course of the Murray River in 1836. Enthusing over fine country to the south, which he described as 'Australia Felix', Mitchell stimulated settlement of the Port Phillip District.
