Merinos in NSW
Description Twenty six Spanish merino sheep were brought to New South Wales from the Cape of Good Hope in 1797. John Macarthur and Samuel Marsden were among those who received sheep from this flock, and both took an active role in the development of the colonial wool industry. Both Macarthur and Marsden later obtained merinos from the King's flock in England for breeding purposes.
