The first colony

Description
Establishment of a penal colony at Port Jackson in 1788 served a number of interests. It offered a new destination for convict transportation, after the flow of convicts to America had been halted by the War of Independence. It also gave Britain a strategic outpost in the Pacific, with access to Asian trading ports. Moreover, the colony formalised Cook's earlier claim to the east coast of the continent in the name of the British monarch, George III.
