Sydney Cove

Description
Captain Arthur Phillip chose Sydney Cove, in Port Jackson, to be the site of the new penal settlement in 1788. The harbour's deep anchorage and the cove's Tank Stream convinced him of its suitability. Today, the Circular Quay ferry and passenger terminals, and 'The Rocks' heritage precinct, dominate the area. The Sydney Opera House, on Bennelong Point, and the Harbour Bridge, on Dawes Point, frame the cove.
