Swan River Colony
Description Captain James Stirling led the colonisation of Australia's west coast, sailing with his family on the Parmelia to the Swan River in 1829. Stirling first ruled the fledgling colony as Lieutenant Governor, and then later as Governor, and was sometimes criticised for his autocratic approach. He resigned his post in 1839 after criticism of his rule and frustrated by the colony's slow growth.
