Sturt's expedition to the centre
Description Charles Sturt mounted an expedition north from Adelaide in 1844 in an attempt to resolve the question of whether there was an inland sea in central Australia. He travelled east from Adelaide to the Murray and Darling rivers, and then probed inland in what proved a fruitless search. Sturt's Narrative of an Expedition into Central Australia, published in 1849, details the two-year expedition.
