Rum Rebellion
Description Members of the New South Wales Corps rebelled against the New South Wales Governor, William Bligh, in 1808. Bligh had tried to stop the corps' officers from illegally trafficking in rum. Among those who had profited from the trade was the wool-grower and former officer, John Macarthur. When Macarthur was refused bail after his arrest in 1808, his military friends freed him and imprisoned Bligh. In December 1809, Governor Lachlan Macquarie arrived with his own troops and the NSW Corps were sent home.
