Robert O'Hara Burke

Description
Robert O'Hara Burke (1821-1861) was an Irish-born soldier who emigrated to Melbourne in 1853. He served as a police inspector and superintendent in Victoria, and was involved in policing at the Buckland River riots in 1857. Despite having no experience as an explorer, he was chosen to lead the Victorian Exploring Expedition by the Royal Society of Victoria in 1860. The expedition sought to cross the country from south to north. However, Burke and his second-in-command William Wills perished at Coopers Creek, South Australia, on their return from the Gulf of Carpentaria, in 1861.
