Ralph Darling
Description Ralph Darling (1775-1858) was Governor of New South Wales from 1825 to 1831. A stern figure who became increasingly unpopular among colonists, Darling undertook a series of administrative and financial reforms. However, his punishment of two soldiers, Joseph Sudds and Patrick Thompson, fanned opposition to his rule, especially among those arguing for constitutional reform. He returned to England in 1831 under a cloud, but was cleared by a parliamentary inquiry.
