Parramatta
Description Parramatta was the first inland settlement of New South Wales, established in 1788 to grow grain for the fledgeling colony. Originally called 'Rose Hill', it was renamed Parramatta - an Aboriginal word meaning 'head of the river' - in 1791. Till 1792, the settlement was larger than Sydney Town. Made a city in 1938, Parramatta is now part of the Greater Sydney area.
