Large fleece of superfine wool from the Macarthur ...

Currency and barter

Description
Governor William Bligh ordered that all promissory notes in New South Wales were to be paid in currency, rather than commodites, in 1806. This reformed the widespread practice of paying accounts in kind, or by barter, particularly by the exchange of rum. The action followed Bligh's dismissal of an appeal by John Macarthur related to the repayment of a promissory note.
