Lachlan Macquarie (1762-1824) was born on the isle of Ulva in the inner Hebrides, Scotland. He rose through army ranks to become governor of New South Wales - sent to Sydney in 1809 with his regiment to replace the New South Wales Corps after the 'rum rebellion'. Macquarie was committed to developing the colony, initiating significant public works and buildings.
