John Macarthur

Description
John Macarthur (1767-1834) arrived with his wife Elizabeth at Sydney as a lieutenant in the New South Wales Corps. He served in government offices, established Elizabeth Farm at Parramatta and was promoted to captain in 1795. After a duel with William Paterson, he was sent to a court-martial in England in 1801. On his return to New South Wales in 1805, Macarthur established a merino flock on a new land grant, Camden Park, and played a key role in developing the Australian wool industry.
