James Stirling
Description James Stirling (1791-1865) explored the Swan River area at the direction of Governor Ralph Darling, of New South Wales, in 1827. On his return to London, Stirling began campaigning for settlement of the continent's west coast. In 1829, he sailed at the head of a small fleet to settle the Swan River, serving first as Lieutenant-Governor, and then from 1831 as governor of the colony.
