James Cook

Description
James Cook (1728-1779) was a farm labourer's son who rose to become a ship's captain and renowned navigator, feted round the world. Cook sailed on three voyages to the Pacific, undertaking scientific research and collecting, mapping uncharted territories and establishing British interests in the region. His first voyage on the Endeavour between 1768 and 1771 charted the east coast of the Australian continent and assembled a vast store of natural history specimens and illustrations. Cook was killed at Kealakekua on the island of Hawaii during his third voyage from 1776-9.
