Inland exploration

Description
Shore-based parties of seafarers explored coastal areas of the Australian continent before colonisation. However, settlement of Port Jackson in 1788 provided the impetus for more intensive expeditions north, west and south. Exploratory parties were often assisted by Aboriginal people, who frequently guided them on established paths and identified key water sources. As the bounds of settlement extended, so did the efforts of explorers through the 19th and 20th centuries. Figures such as John Oxley, Thomas Mitchell, Ludwig Leichhardt and the Forrest brothers were celebrated in popular accounts.
