Female Factory opens

Description
The first Female Factory established in 1804 at Parramatta, New South Wales, consisted of a long single room. In 1821, a three-storey building with barracks and female factory, designed by the convict architect Francis Greenway, was built. Female convicts were sent directly to the factory on arrival in the colony and employed on tasks such as making rope. The factory also served as a labour hire centre and arranged the marriage of convict women to single men.
