The 'Hooper and Co. collection' consists of six paper administrative files created by British coachbuilders Hooper and Company in relation to the Daimler DE36 motor cars commissioned by the Australian government for the 1949 royal visit. The collection also includes eight paper booklets relating to aspects of the company's history between approximately 1888 and 1909. The collection is in a reasonably intact and well-preserved state of conservation.
This collection's primary significance is an association with the Daimler DE 36hp vehicles commissioned for the 1948 royal tour of Australia and ultimately used during the 1954 royal tour. It offers a unique level of research detail in documenting the earliest-known provenance for the Daimler motor car held within the Museum's National Historical Collection. This prestigious car has relevance to broad areas of Australian history including the changing role of the monarchy in Australia, transport technologies and the relationship between Australians and their British heritage.
