Developing Colonies

Description
The foundation of colonies after the penal settlement of Port Jackson in 1788 was marked by design and opportunism. Van Diemen's Land, Victoria, and Queensland began as outposts of New South Wales before securing separate colonial status: Van Diemen's Land in 1825, Victoria in 1851 and Queensland in 1859. The free colonies of Western Australia and South Australia were established in 1829 and 1836 respectively, though Western Australia later admitted convicts, in 1850.
