Colonial farming
Description From the beginning, the Australian colonies sought to become self-sufficient through farming. Colonial farmers introduced livestock and grew grains from Europe with which they were familiar and knowledgeable. Farming practices were often adapted or changed to suit Australia's particular physical conditions. Sheep grazing became profitable after the introduction of merino sheep to cope with the hot, dry climate. Wheat-growing inspired inventions, such as the Ridley Stripper and the Stump-Jump Plough. Farming innovations generated great wealth in Australia, but also led to environmental changes.
