Caroline Chisholm

Description
Caroline Chisholm (1808-77) was a philanthropist who worked selflessly on behalf of emigrants to Australia. Arriving in New South Wales with her husband Archibald in 1838, she was shocked by the treatment of young women in the colony. In 1841, Chisholm established the Sydney Immigrants' Home to house single migrant women. She also set up job schemes and campaigned for better working conditions. Chisholm was convinced that more families were needed to improve living conditions in the colonies. In 1846, she returned to England, where she continued to argue for improvements in migrant conditions. In 1854, she returned to Australia and continued her work, ignoring rewards and personal comfort.
