Crossing the Blue Mountains
Description The Blue Mountains west of Sydney were a natural barrier to the expansion of settlement in New South Wales. In 1813, Gregory Blaxland, William Wentworth and William Lawson followed high ridges and spurs across the mountains to the inland plains. Their journey has been widely regarded as the first successful crossing of the range, and opened up western districts to pastoralists and others who followed their route.
