Inkstand presented to Sir Robert Menzies in Commemoration of the Commonwealth Royal Tour 1954

Inkstand including the stand, inkwells and a case for the stand. The inkstand is made from sterling silver and hallmarked H.G. Plante London 1953. The stand is rectangular with a foot at each corner, and it has a central hinge paralllel to the long side with two hinged lids. Upon opening the lids on one side there are two ink wells, the other side is empty. One of the lids has been engraved with the Coat of Arms and inside the lid above the inkwells an inscription reads "To the Right Honorable R.G. Menzies C.H. Q.C. Prime Minister of Australia in Commemoration of the Commonwealth Tour 1954..." followed by the engraved signatures of Elizabeth R and Phillip. The inkwells have a sterling silver square top and a glass bottom. The case has a maroon cover featuring a gold border, and a hinged lid that opens from the centre top out to either side with two metal clasps that hold the lid together. The inside of the case is lined with red velvet and white satin.

Collection statement of significance
The RG Menzies Collection provides a material record of the success of the career of RG Menzies. The collection includes a range of medals and civil awards received by Sir Robert such as his Jubilee and Coronation medals, Order of Australia, Companion of Honour and US Legion of Merit. There are also a number of special presentation items including a walking stick, cigar boxes, silver gravy boats from the Kooyong electorate and a silver inkstand presented by Queen Elizabeth II. The collection taken as a whole reflects Menzies' public standing as Australia's longest serving prime minister.
