The American-Australian Scientific Expedition to Arnhem Land collection
The 1948 American-Australian Expedition to Arnhem Land (AASEAL) was one of the largest scientific and cultural expeditions mounted in Australia. The material collected during this major collaborative research venture was distributed to art galleries and museums in Australia, and to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. The National Museum of Australia's collection is part of the Australian Government's share of the material from the Expedition and was transferred to the Museum from the Australian Institute of Anatomy in Canberra in 1984. The collection consists of over 270 ethnographic objects, which includes bark paintings, ceremonial objects, musical instruments and wood carvings.
