Volume 3, Number 1

reCollections is an independent, peer-reviewed journal focused on museology, museum practice, the history and interpretation of objects, and the social and environmental history of material culture.

In Volume 3, Number 1 (March 2008), Cherie McKeich looks at the history of Museum Victoria's collection of Indian botanical specimens, first exhibited in colonial exhibitions in Melbourne in the 1880s, Louise Douglas summarises the development of colonial displays in international exhibitions and reflects on aspects of colonial identity, intercolonial cooperation (and rivalry) and the challenges faced by organisers in putting these displays together, and Paul Arthur surveys the digital history field — a broad field that is becoming increasingly relevant to museum practice.

This issue also features a commentary piece by David Kaus on the important and sensitive area of the repatriation of secret/sacred objects.

Reviewed books are The manual of strategic planning for museums, The future of Indigenous museums: Perspectives from the southwest Pacific, Ochre and rust: Artefacts and encounters on Australian frontiers, Exhibitions: A practical guide for small museums and galleries, Museums, nations, identities: Wales and its national museums, Continent of curiosities: A journey through Australian natural history, Museum marketing: Competing in the global marketplace, and Museum: The Macleays, their collection and the search for order.

And finally, Luke Taylor reviews two major exhibitions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art at two of Canberra's premier cultural institutions – Culture warriors at the National Gallery of Australia, and Papunya painting: Out of the desert at the National Museum of Australia.
