Volume 2, Number 1

reCollections is an independent, peer-reviewed journal focused on museology, museum practice, the history and interpretation of objects, and the social and environmental history of material culture.

Volume 2, Number 1 (March 2007) includes papers on the first published images of the thylacine, First World War archival records held by the Australian War Memorial, Ferdinand von Mueller's efforts to disseminate botanical knowledge in early Victoria, the relationships of the Australian National Gallery and the National Museum of Australia with Aboriginal art, and a review of several recent museum studies anthologies.

Reviewed books include Museum texts: Communication frameworks, South Pacific museums: Experiments in culture, and The anthropology of art: A reader.

A commentary piece discusses Maropeng, the visitors' centre at the 'Cradle of Mankind', the new World Heritage Site near Johannesburg, South Africa.

Our exhibition reviewers visit The Australian Garden at Cranbourne, Melbourne, The Great Wall of China: Dynasties, dragons, and warriors, and Between the flags: 100 years of surf lifesaving.
