Faith and Culture in Islam

‘So That You Might Know Each Other’, a verse from the Holy Qur’an, is a source of inspiration and guidance for the Islamic world and beyond, reminding us of the value of mutual respect for each other.

It was the inspiration behind the name of the new National Museum exhibition, and helped inform the events on offer with this exhibition about Islamic faith and culture. We’re looking forward to a series of conversations and lectures with friends from the Islamic community.

Conversations about Islam

Twice a month, members of Canberra’s Muslim community are visiting the Museum to answer questions, and start conversations about Islam. Come along and ask what is Iftar? Why do Muslims fast at Ramadan? What’s the difference between and niqab and a hijab?

The Museum’s free Ask Me Anything events are being held on the first Wednesday and third Saturday of the month, until 21 July 2018. Our guests will be in the Atrium outside the exhibition from midday to 2pm.

Community support

The Museum has enjoyed working with representatives of the Islamic community to present a wonderful array of exhibition events.

The Bluestar Intercultural foundation, the Museum of Islamic Culture, the Australian National University’s Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies and many others have contributed to the program of events, made possible with the generous support of the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates.

Lecture series

The ‘So That You Might Know Each’ lecture series started on 24 April, when Muhammed Aksu and Dylan Esteban from the Bluestar Intercultural Foundation explored the phrase behind the exhibition title. The audio recording of this lecture will be available on the Museum’s website soon.

Meantime, keep an eye on the exhibition events page for upcoming lectures and other offerings to come.
